Mathi Temple in Chitkul is a must-visit place in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, dedicated to the goddess Mathi. It is located in Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibet Road and the last point in India accessible without a permit. According to local legend, Mathi Devi settled in Chitkul after a long and arduous journey. Her presence brought prosperity to the village, which continues to worship her fervently. The temple complex houses three shrines, with the main one said to have been constructed by a resident of Garhwal. The goddess is enshrined in a square ark made of walnut wood, covered with clothes, and adorned with a tuft of yak tail. Two poles, called bayanga, are inserted into the ark for carrying the goddess during certain rituals.
