The Sakya Tangyud Monastery, also known as Komic Monastery, is a prominent attraction in Kaza, situated amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. Perched at an altitude of 4,520 meters (14,830 feet), it stands as one of the highest altitude monasteries in India. Built like a fortress on the edge of a deep canyon, the monastery boasts slanted mud walls adorned with striking red ochre and white vertical stripes, giving it a majestic appearance. This architectural style, resembling a Tibetan castle, adds to its allure and makes it look taller than it actually is.

Historically, the Sakya Tangyud Monastery dates back to the early 14th century, established during the rise of the Sakyapas under Mongol patronage. It is one of the few remaining monasteries of the Sakya sect in Spiti Valley, with its name possibly derived from the Sakya revision of the Tang-rGyud or Tantra treatises. Despite facing challenges such as earthquakes and robberies in the past, the monastery continues to be revered by locals and visitors alike for its spiritual significance and stunning location overlooking the town of Kaza.
