Bantony Castle in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

Bantony Castle is located near Mall Road in Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and is a historic site that has recently reopened to the public. Built 125 years ago as the summer residence of the Maharaja of Sirmaur, it is a testament to Shimla's rich heritage. Designed by TEG Cooper, the castle's construction began in 1880 on the site of a cottage belonging to Cap A. Gordon, which housed army officials. The castle, along with the Bantony Cottage, is now part of the Shimla Heritage Zone, attracting tourists with its beautiful wooden architecture set amidst sprawling lawns.

Despite ongoing refurbishment, parts of the Bantony Castle remain in ruins, adding a melancholic charm to the estate. Recognizing its tourism potential, the government acquired the property to restore it for future generations. The reopening ceremony on September 20 was presided over by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, who highlighted the castle's significance in showcasing Shimla's past as the summer capital during the British colonial era.
