The Central Research Institute (CRI) in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, is a renowned research institute that has been a pioneer in the field of vaccines, not just in India but globally. Established on May 3, 1905, the institute was originally known as the Pasteur Institute for India, founded by Sir David Semple. It was created with a primary focus on research in medical and public health, vaccine and antisera production, and serving as a national referral center for public health issues. Over its 118-year journey, the institute has achieved significant milestones, especially notable is its contribution to vaccine production during World War II for immunizing troops. Today, the CRI is under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and continues to play a vital role in the National Health Programme.

One of the institute's key missions is to manufacture life-saving immunobiologicals, including the DPT group of vaccines and antisera. It also conducts surveillance activities and provides teaching and training in microbiology and vaccinology. Recently, the institute has focused on meeting regulatory requirements and introduced a cGMP compliant facility for the production of DPT group vaccines, making it the first Central Government Institute in India to achieve this. The vision of the institute is to manufacture vaccines against emerging diseases under cGMP compliance and to become a hub for teaching and training in the field of immunobiologicals.
