Gorton Castle in Shimla is a magnificent heritage monument that showcases a blend of innovative design and skilled craftsmanship. Built over a century ago, this castle remains a popular tourist attraction in Shimla. Today, it serves as the office of the Accountant General of Himachal Pradesh. Perched on top of a hill, Gorton Castle covers an area of 400 feet by 100 feet and stands three stories tall, housing 125 rooms of various sizes. The castle's construction materials include timber blocks, mostly of Rosewood from the Andaman Islands, and grey stones from Sanjauli, Himachal Pradesh. The castle's red iron roof and innovative design features, such as the net (jari) work of Rajasthan on its balconies, add to its fairy-tale charm.
