The Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh is a renowned research institute established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 1964. Functioning from 20 October 1965, it is housed in the historic Rashtrapati Niwas, originally built as a residence for Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy of India, in the late 19th century. Designed by architect Henry Irwin, the building occupies Observatory Hill, offering breathtaking views of Shimla. Over the years, it served as the summer retreat for the President of India before being transformed into a center for higher learning by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan due to neglect. The institute was inaugurated by Prof. S. Radhakrishnan in 1965, with Professor Niharranjan Ray serving as its first director.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study is known for its fellowship programs, attracting scholars from diverse fields for research and interdisciplinary dialogue. Fellows, both National and regular, engage in research on approved themes, residing at the institute from April to November. Weekly seminars foster formal interaction, while fellows may conduct fieldwork and consultations from December to March. Upon completing their term, fellows are required to submit their research work for publication by the institute, maintaining its reputation as a hub for academic excellence and intellectual exchange.
