Kasauli Brewery and Distillery, located in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, is a historic establishment dating back to the late 1920s. Founded by Edward Abraham Dyer during the British Raj, it initially served as a brewery before transitioning to a distillery in 1835. The brewery's legacy includes producing Asia's first beer brand, "Lion Beer," and India's inaugural single malt whisky, the "Solan No. 1." Today, both brands continue to be produced, with Lion beer now brewed in Solan due to water scarcity, while Solan No. 1 whisky is crafted in Kasauli using original equipment, including copper pot stills.
The brewery's relocation to Solan was driven by the availability of fresh spring water in the area, with the original Kasauli site converted into a distillery. Despite the town's growth and increased water usage, the distillery remains operational, making it the oldest working distillery in Asia and one of the oldest continuously operating whisky distilleries worldwide. Edward Dyer's vision for producing exceptional malt whisky has endured, with the Kasauli Brewery continuing to produce the renowned Solan No. 1, while Solan Brewery in Solan produces the Lion beer, maintaining its status as Asia's first beer brand.
