The Malana Dam, situated in Malana Village, Himachal Pradesh, is a significant landmark that has brought this small village closer to the rest of India. This hydroelectric dam has not only connected Malana with the outside world but has also become a vital source of revenue for the region. The dam's construction has led to the establishment of the Malana Hydro Power Station, which contributes significantly to the local economy. The dam has also impacted the traditional economy of Malana, which was primarily based on crafting items like baskets and ropes from hemp. With tourism emerging as another major source of income, the Malana Dam has played a crucial role in shaping the village's economic landscape.
According to local legends, Malana has a rich history dating back to ancient times when Jamlu Rishi, a sage, inhabited the area and established rules and regulations. The villagers claim to have one of the oldest democracies globally, with a well-organized parliamentary system guided by their deity, Jamlu Rishi. Despite being currently associated with a sage from the Puranas, Jamlu's worship dates back to pre-Aryan times. The village's independence is said to have been acquired during the Mughal era when Emperor Akbar visited Malana to seek a cure for an ailment. After being cured, he exempted the valley's inhabitants from paying taxes. Another tradition suggests that Malana was founded by remnants of Alexander the Great's army. However, modern developments like the Malana Hydro Power Station and the construction of new roads have changed the village's landscape and accessibility.
