Shri Rukmani Kund, located in the picturesque Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh is a serene reservoir nestled amidst the stunning mountains of the Sivalik Hills Forest. Situated about 28 kilometers from Bilaspur town, this sacred site holds a special place in local folklore and history. It was chosen for the Har Gaon Ki Kahani Programme in 2012–2013, highlighting its cultural significance.
Legend has it that the reservoir was created through the sacrifice of a brave young woman named Rukmani. Facing a severe water shortage, the ruler of Barsandh had a dream suggesting that sacrificing his son's bride could bring forth water. In a courageous act, Rukmani volunteered and was buried alive at the site. Her sacrifice led to the emergence of the reservoir, which now serves as a vital water source for many villages in the region. A small temple has been erected at the site in her honor, and a fair is held annually to commemorate her sacrifice. People believe that the grass hanging from the walls of the Kund represents Rukmani's hair, and tying ribbons and bangles to it is considered a tribute to her. The water of the reservoir is also believed to possess healing properties for skin ailments. Read more on Shri Rukmani Kund in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.
