The Ridge in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

The Ridge in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh is a bustling open space at the heart of the city. It serves as the focal point for all cultural activities in Shimla and is located along the famous Mall Road, which is the city's main shopping center. The Ridge acts as a central hub connecting many major places in Shimla, such as Sanjauli Snowdown (IGMC), Jakhu Temple, Kali Bari, and Annadale. It runs parallel to the Mall Road, stretching from east to west and meets it at the Scandal Point on the west side. Towards the east, The Ridge road leads to the popular Lakkar Bazaar, known for its wooden crafts market. The Ridge is a major landmark and is easily recognizable, often featured in newspapers when covered in fresh snow during winter.

Prominent landmarks on The Ridge include the Christ Church, built in 1844 in a neo-Gothic style, and a Tudorbethan-styled library building constructed in 1910. The area also features four statues, honoring Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Dr. Y.S. Parmar (the first chief minister of Himachal Pradesh), and the recently added statue of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Ridge was once the base of Shimla's thickest forest and is now dotted with firs, pines, Himalayan oak, and carmine rhododendron trees, along with red-roofed chalets, half-timbered houses, and Gothic government buildings.
