Viceregal Lodge Travel Guide and Tourism in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

Viceregal Lodge in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

The Viceregal Lodge, now known as the Rashtrapati Niwas, stands as a testament to colonial grandeur atop the Observatory Hills in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. This magnificent structure, designed by British architect Henry Irwin, was built between 1880 and 1888 during Lord Dufferin’s tenure as Viceroy of India. The lodge's construction cost around 38 lakh rupees, a considerable sum at the time, and covered an extensive estate of 331 acres, though it now rests on 110 acres. Drawing inspiration from the English Renaissance and Scottish Highland castles, the lodge features a light blue-grey stone façade with intricate woodwork inside, including Burma teak brought specifically for the construction.

Once the summer residence of the British Viceroy, the Viceregal Lodge has witnessed pivotal moments in India's history. It was here that important decisions were made, leading to India's independence. After independence, the lodge was handed over to the Indian government and later became the Presidential Palace. In 1965, the Ministry of Education established the Indian Institute of Advanced Study here, which it continues to house. The lodge's serene location, surrounded by lush greenery and offering panoramic views, adds to its charm. While only a few rooms are accessible to the public, a visit to the Viceregal Lodge is a journey back in time, offering a glimpse into India's colonial past and its path to independence.
