Awa Devi Temple, also known as Jalpa Devi Temple, is a revered shrine located approximately 24 kilometers from the bustling city of Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh. Situated atop a hill, this sacred temple offers not only a spiritual retreat but also a visual treat, thanks to its breathtaking backdrop. The temple, with a history spanning approximately 250 years, is cared for by a local committee and is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindu devotees.
Legend has it that the idol of Jalpa Devi was once being transported by people from Mandi district to their region. However, during the journey, they suddenly lost their eyesight. It was only when they turned back and retraced their steps that their vision was restored. Taking this as a divine sign, they decided to place the idol back where it was originally kept. Since then, the local people have revered Awa Devi as their patron goddess (kul-devi). Every year, a large number of devotees visit the Awa Devi Temple to seek the goddess's blessings and fulfill their wishes. The Ecological Survey of India has recognized the hilltop where the temple is situated as the highest point in Hamirpur district, adding to the temple's allure as a place of spiritual significance and natural beauty.
