Chaugan is the vibrant heart of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh and serves as the central hub for all activities in the town. This large, four-sided green meadow is surrounded by significant administrative buildings and a shopping arcade that dates back to the British era. The old Akhand Chandi Palace is also nearby, adding historical charm to the area. Originally, Chaugan was a collection of five smaller meadows that were consolidated by the British in the 1890s to create a single large esplanade and sports complex. Today, it stretches 800 meters in length and 80 meters in breadth, making it an unusually spacious area for a hill station.
Chaugan is a popular spot for various activities throughout the year. During the summer, it becomes a favorite place for cricket matches, picnics, and leisurely walks. One of the most notable events held here is the annual Minjar Mela, a vibrant fair that transforms the entire area into a bustling market for secondhand goods. This fair is a significant cultural event in Chamba, drawing visitors from all around. However, following the Dussera celebration, the grounds are closed to the public until April, allowing the grass to recover and be ready for the next season of events and activities.
