Dhankar Monastery, also known as Dhankar Gompa, is a historic Buddhist temple located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Situated at an altitude of 3,894 meters (12,774 feet) in the Spiti Valley, it overlooks the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers. The name "Dhankar" translates to "fort on a cliff," reflecting its strategic location on a 1000-foot high spur. Built over a thousand years ago, the monastery served as a fort monastery following the Central Tibetan architectural style. It was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom in the 17th century, and remnants of its early rulers, the Nonos, can still be seen. The complex comprises multi-storey buildings, including halls like Kanjur, Lhakhang, and Dukhang, adorned with ancient Buddhist scriptures, murals, and statues. The monastery also houses a statue of Vairochana or Dhayan Buddha and is associated with the Great Translator, Rinchen Zanggpo. Dhankar Monastery offers stunning views of the valley and is a significant spiritual and cultural landmark in the region.
