Sui Mata Temple Travel Guide & Tourism in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh

Sui Mata Temple in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh

Sui Mata Temple is located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh and stands as a tribute to the sacrifice of Queen Sui, the wife of King Sahil Varman. Located in the Saho village of Chamba district, the temple is a symbol of devotion and sacrifice. It is adorned with beautiful paintings depicting the life of Queen Sui. Every year, a fair is held at the temple from 15th March to 1st April, attracting married women and girls who come to pay their respects to the queen. Visiting this sacred place offers a deep insight into the traditions and culture of Chamba.

The temple's foundation is rooted in a legend of sacrifice. King Sahil Varman, faced with a severe drought, sought ways to please the gods to bring rain. Advised by Brahmins and religious advisors, he was told to sacrifice either his son or his wife. Overwhelmed with grief, he chose to sacrifice his son, but Queen Sui could not bear to see her son die. She sacrificed herself instead, and soon after, water began to flow in the village, ending the drought. The temple, constructed on Shah Madar Hill, consists of three parts: the main temple, a passage, and the memorial of Queen Sui. It is a place of worship and reflection, offering a glimpse into the history and beliefs of the region. Read more on Sui Mata Temple in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh.
